Hi! My name is Debra Henk. I work for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Kaiserslautern, Germany. I have taught READ 180 for the past 5 years. This website developed as an outgrowth of a 3-year Professional Growth Plan(PGP)to support new READ 180 teachers in my school district. Response was phenomenal and my simple webpage grew a life of its own. My website is a labor of love and always a work in progress. My school is updating to the Enterprise Edition of READ 180 and I'll add information after I work with it during school year 2007-2008.

You may be wondering why I use a Dragon Den as my classroom motif? The alliteration (words starting with the same initial sound) is a leftover habit from my years of teaching primary grades. Primary teachers always seem to have a classroom theme or mascot. Years ago, during our unit study about the Chinese New Year, the students learned that I was born in the Year of the Dragon. Dragons are associated with wisdom and knowledge. They symbolize power, excellence, ability, and intelligence. Dragons persevere until they overcome the obstacles in their path. These positive attributes are exactly what I am trying to instill in my students. After establishing my "Catch a Dragon by the Tale"  theme, I started receiving toy dragons and other dragon memorabilia as classroom gifts. My dragon collection was born and continues to grow. Dragons are prominently displayed around my READ 180 classroom. You can catch a glimpse of my dragon collection in the Dragons on Parade page.
